The Tax Compliance Manager role is suited to an experienced tax professional who wants both the responsibility of leading a compliance function and the flexibility of a modern working environment.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Taxation, Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • Strong practical experience in South African tax compliance.
  • Proven experience managing a significant portfolio of tax clients.
  • Demonstrated experience across individual, company and trust taxation.
  • Previous experience supervising, reviewing or managing the work of other tax professionals.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Income Tax Act
    • VAT Act
    • Tax Administration Act
    • SARS processes and compliance requirements
    • SARS eFiling
  • Experience dealing directly with SARS and resolving complex tax compliance matters.
  • Experience with objections, appeals, verifications and dispute resolution processes.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and general IT skills.
  • Experience with Caseware Tax Cloud would be advantageous.
  • SAIPA or SAIT affiliation or membership would be advantageous.
  • Previous experience in a professional services, accounting or tax practice environment would be advantageous.

Duties and Responsibilities

As Tax Compliance Manager, you will take ownership of a diverse portfolio of tax clients and oversee the effective delivery of tax compliance services across individuals, companies and trusts.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and reviewing the preparation and submission of income tax returns for individuals, companies and trusts.
  • Reviewing and submitting provisional tax returns.
  • Overseeing VAT and other applicable tax compliance requirements.
  • Managing SARS eFiling administration, including registrations, deregistrations, amendments and accurate maintenance of client profiles.
  • Reviewing and submitting tax directive applications.
  • Managing SARS correspondence, verification requests, audits and requests for information.
  • Preparing, reviewing and managing objections, appeals and dispute resolution matters, where required.
  • Assisting clients with tax residency, non-residency and related tax matters.
  • Providing technical guidance on tax compliance matters and responding to more complex client queries.
  • Monitoring compliance deadlines across the client portfolio and ensuring submissions are completed accurately and on time.
  • Reviewing client files, supporting documentation and tax calculations to maintain strong quality standards.
  • Liaising directly with SARS and managing escalated client matters.
  • Reviewing work completed by team members and providing clear, constructive feedback.
  • Leading, mentoring and developing junior and senior members of the tax compliance team.
  • Allocating work effectively, monitoring team capacity and managing progress against deadlines.
  • Identifying technical, operational and compliance risks and escalating matters where appropriate.
  • Supporting the continuous improvement of tax compliance processes, systems and controls.
  • Building and maintaining strong, professional relationships with clients.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in South African tax legislation, SARS requirements and relevant tax developments.
  • Supporting the broader Tax leadership team with operational, client and people-related matters.
