Specialist Rock Engineer - Mining - Northern Cape
Introduction
A leading international mining house is seeking an experienced Specialist Rock Engineer to join its operation in the Northern Cape.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a technically strong Rock Engineering professional to provide strategic leadership in rock mechanics, strata control, mine design, ground support systems and geotechnical risk management across both underground and open-cast mining operations.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the long-term stability of mining excavations, improving mine safety, optimising extraction sequences, and implementing innovative Rock Engineering solutions that support sustainable mining operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
As the Specialist Rock Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Planning mine layouts, stoping sequences and excavation designs.
- Designing and implementing Rock Engineering and ground support standards.
- Controlling and mitigating rock burst risks and geotechnical hazards.
- Ensuring the long-term stability of stopes, haulages, crosscuts, declines and inclined shafts.
- Designing shaft pillars and extraction sequences to maximise safe ore recovery.
- Providing Rock Engineering support for major excavations, including pump chambers, water dams, settlers and hoist chambers.
- Developing and implementing support design projects to improve operational performance and return on investment.
- Identifying and implementing Rock Engineering and Strata Control best practices.
- Monitoring geotechnical conditions and recommending corrective actions.
- Developing and reviewing Codes of Practice relating to Rock Engineering, Ground Control and Strata Management.
- Supporting Risk Management, Health, Safety and Environmental compliance initiatives.
- Facilitating introductory Rock Mechanics and Strata Control training for mine production officials and operational teams.
- Collaborating with Mining, Geology, Survey, Planning and Operations teams to optimise mine design and production.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
- BEng Mining Engineering, BSc Geology or equivalent qualification will be advantageous.
- Chamber of Mines Rock Engineering Certificate (Essential).
- Medical Fitness Certificate.
- Minimum 5 years' operational experience at Senior Rock Engineer or Strata Control level.
- Experience within both Underground and Open Cast Mining environments.
- Valid Code B Driver's Licence.
