Senior Bookkeeper / Accountant

About the Role

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper / Accountant to oversee the day-to-day accounting and bookkeeping functions of the business. This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the full accounting cycle, completing month-end close, and supporting the business with timely financial reporting. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full bookkeeping and accounting cycle.
  • Maintain the general ledger, reconcile accounts, and complete monthly closes.
  • Process and oversee Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR).
  • Perform bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports.
  • Assist with cash flow tracking and financial reporting.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Support budgeting, audits, and tax preparation with external accountants.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and efficiencies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Based in South Africa with full-time availability.
  • 5+ years of bookkeeping and accounting experience.
  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience managing the full accounting cycle and month-end close.
  • Proficiency in Xero or similar accounting software.
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

  • Experience supporting multiple entities.
  • Experience working with international or remote companies.
  • Exposure to budgeting and cash flow reporting.
  • Experience with payroll and tax support.
  • Leverages AI tools to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency.
  • Identifies opportunities to apply AI and automation to existing processes, and can implement practical solutions.
  • Uses AI to work smarter–– automating repetitive tasks and improving how things get done.
  • Comfortable integrating AI tools into day-to-day work to increase speed and quality of output.
  • Adopts new tools and AI capabilities quickly, adapting workflows to get better results with less overhead.
  • Takes an experimental, iterative approac–– testing AI-driven improvements and refining based on what works.
  • Proactively spots inefficiencies and uses AI to redesign processes, staying flexible as tools and needs evolve.
