Project Engineer - High voltage electrical

Provide engineering leadership and technical oversight/support on projects, ensuring the successful delivery of design, procurement, remodelling, construction, and commissioning phases. The Project Engineer will coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage engineering deliverables, and ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle. The Project Engineer will ensure that the appointed design partner is properly managed to ensure timeous, optimized and technically sound design data.

Although the key focus area of this role will be pertaining to the technical portion of a project, the Project Engineer will need to have significant input / alignment & provide support to the Project Manager on all aspects of the project to ensure that the project execution is activated & completed as per the requirements, budgets, timelines & SHEQ guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Result Areas

Technical / Engineering – Critical Requirement

  • Effective & technically compliant procurement & execution
  • Extensive understanding of the Eskom, IPP, REIPPP, and NTCSA processes & requirements
  • Proven competent in understanding and applying the various (local) Municipal, Districts, National and International Governmental engineering and related standards, principles and regulations as it pertains to the relevant engineering field.
  • EPC projects – Engineering design interface and product development co-ordination between the various engineering fields to develop and close-out on a client approved final design fit for purpose and executable for the project team.

People Management

  • In consultation with senior management, recruit, interview and select staff with appropriate skills for project activities.
  • Manage project staff according to established policies and practices.
  • In conjunction with human resources deals with all disciplinary and grievance matters.
  • Ensure compliance to training required for different disciplines and projects such as Eskom Authorization, C-Green, FAS, Construction Regulations, etc.
  • The PE will support the PM during Project Reviews to management and ensure that the project achieves the set goals.

Project Engineering

  • Strong engineering oversight is required to ensure quality of construction & prevention of defects.
  • Review and scrutinise external consultant designs and value engineering to ensure effective execution and that best practice principles are applied within designs & commissioning protocols.
  • Bridge the gap between engineering, procurement, and construction, ensuring alignment across all phases, while managing risks and fostering innovation & effective execution.
  • Providing technical & engineering guidance / input to project team, construction managers and site personnel.
  • Technical & engineering oversight on construction sites to ensure compliance to the design requirements and standards as applicable.
  • Rapid response to site technical & engineering issues to ensure effective problem resolution.
  • Oversee the planning, design, and execution of high voltage projects undertaken, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to required safety and quality standards.
  • Attendance of FATS / SATS of equipment when required.
  • Compile value engineering proposals to ensure effective execution.
  • Compile engineering and quality check sheets to improve quality of site work implementation.
  • Compile technical procedures to ensure improved installation and oversight.
  • Ensure all projects adhere to strict safety standards and regulations, given the high-risk nature of high voltage work.
  • Prepare technical reports, as-built drawings, and maintenance manuals, support regulatory submissions and post-project audits for reliability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Review and approve engineering designs, specifications, and calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards (e.g. IEC, IEEE), and safety regulations as well as the contractual obligations for the specific project.
  • Acts as the technical interface with the client & client engineering team, suppliers and all other relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure correct, compliant and cost-effective procurement of technical equipment.
  • Assist in development of technical equipment procurement strategy and alignment of this in the project program to minimize risk & delays.

 

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • National Diploma / B.Tech / B.Eng / B.Sc. Eng in Electrical / Mechanical / Civil Engineering – University or University of Technology.
  • Registered as Professional Engineering Technologist or higher.
  • 7 years’ experience in the construction, engineering and consulting industry relevant to high voltage electrical / civil infrastructure sector. Exposure to design of high voltage electrical / civil infrastructure will be advantageous.
