The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Modeling and Review Specialist to create, revise, and evaluate parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies. You will turn detailed written briefs into robust models with dependable sketches, constraints, and feature trees.
The work combines advanced parametric modeling with practical engineering judgment across injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, casting, and forging. You will also document important design decisions so the resulting CAD data can support AI model training.
- Work on both individual mechanical parts and complete assemblies
- Review models for accuracy, manufacturability, specification compliance, and design intent
- Communicate technical feedback and design rationale clearly
What You'll Do
You will create and maintain consistent CAD data while identifying gaps, deviations, and risks in existing designs. Your reviews should reflect production-readiness considerations, including dimensional accuracy, tolerances, feature-tree structure, and manufacturing constraints.
- Build fully parametric 3D models from written briefs
- Edit existing models as requirements change while preserving manufacturability
- Audit dimensions, tolerances, feature trees, and design intent
- Review designs for production readiness and specification compliance
- Apply design-for-manufacturing knowledge across relevant production methods
- Document the rationale behind important modeling and design decisions
- Provide clear technical feedback in writing and conversation
Required Qualifications
You should have extensive practical experience with parametric CAD platforms and the ability to create robust, reusable models of mechanical parts and assemblies. The experience guidance provided for this work is four or more years for model editing assignments or ten or more years for complex model creation assignments.
- Professional experience with FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD platforms
- Strong experience with Autodesk Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar tools when applicable
- Applied knowledge of GD&T, including ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard
- Design-for-manufacturing expertise across at least two or three relevant processes
- Ability to handle assembly-level modeling and single-part work
- Ability to assess dimensional accuracy, tolerances, manufacturability, and design intent

- Professional FreeCAD experience
- Experience transferring knowledge between parametric CAD platforms
- Reverse engineering, including scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion
