Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position is to design, coordinate and manage Mechanical Engineering CAPEX projects from conceptualization to handover, in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards to provide optimal building infrastructure solutions.

Position Outputs:

The outputs of this position include:

  • Design, coordinate and manage mechanical engineering projects from conceptualization to handover, in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards to provide optimal building infrastructure solutions.
  • Research and present innovative solutions to engineering problems.
  • Analyze client user requirements and suggest engineering specifications.
  • Complete technical reports and other documentation.
  • Inspect completed installations to ensure conformance to design and equipment specifications and compliance with operational and safety standards.
  • Review technical drawings, specifications of mechanical systems, and topographical maps to ensure that installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements.
  • Attending scheduled design and progress meetings.
  • Ensure that external contractors fully understand client/business needs when design work is outsourced.
  • Provide input to conceptual and detailed engineering and mechanical system designs.
  • Update technical documentation and plans for future reference.
  • Compile tender specifications, evaluate proposals, and recommend contractors.
  • Successfully commission and handover projects to clients.
  • Provide ad hoc operational support and assistance/advice including post-project completion support.
  • Compile and submit projections, plans, and fund allocation in time to support Capex processes.
  • Oversee the development of proposals and specifications, select preferred suppliers, and negotiate contracts, considering cost, quality, and empowerment requirements.
  • Manage the delivery lifecycle of the project (Plan, Execute, Design, Test, Implementation and Training).
  • Provide professional advice and expertise to ad hoc and special projects, as required.
  • Develop a detailed project budget within the approved business case budget.
  • Accurately prepare technical input specification and evaluation of tenders and RFQ's in liaison with Procurement/legal, stakeholders & clients.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all internal and external stakeholders through frequent communication and feedback sessions business to enable and optimize.
  • Manage Technical operations: All facilities require engineers to manage their day-to-today technical operations & critical systems.
  • Project Management - MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING (MEP engineering) to ensure the vendors implement the design in the areas of mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing systems for any new or upcoming site, ensuring that it's done as per the design intent.
  • Implementing and coordinating the maintenance plans for the area of responsibility, including but not limited to lifts, shafts, plumbing, fire control systems, escalators, and levers.
  • Implement Maintenance Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Adhere to all and assess OHSA regulations, SHEQ regulations, and company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor asset condition and propose remedial actions to meet the life expectancy of the assets.
  • Manage the technical team, ensuring Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time-bound objectives are in place, and ensure performances are assessed regularly.
  • Supervise and ensure the safe operation of plant and machinery.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • NQF 7/8, B.Eng./BSc/BTECH (Mechanical or Electro-Mechanical)
  • Project Management Qualification or Accreditation (PMP and/or SACPCMP) is an added advantage
  • Be registered as a Professional Engineer or be eligible and intend to register as a Professional Engineer within 2 years with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
  • Minimum 5 years in Engineering/Projects/Maintenance/Facilities environment, including experience in all aspects of design, specifications, and implementation of building services, air conditioning, and fire protection.
  • Project and Contract management experience, a Government Certificate of Competency is highly advantageous.
  • Fire systems experience is highly advantageous.
