Legal and Compliance Manager - Medical Schemes - 6 Month contract urgent placement

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide strategic legal and compliance leadership to the Scheme by delivering expert legal advisory services, managing legal risk, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing contract management, and supporting sound governance practices across the organisation.

 

Strategic and Operational Management
· Serve as a trusted advisor to Executive Management and actively participate in EXCO
discussions, providing strategic legal and compliance guidance.
· Lead the drafting, review, negotiation and management of complex contracts, agreements
and legal documentation to protect the Scheme's interests.
· Represent the Scheme in legal, regulatory and governance matters, providing clear
instruction to legal service providers and ensuring favourable outcomes.
· Manage the Scheme's litigation portfolio and oversee engagements with external
attorneys.
· Provide legal and regulatory input at Board, Committee and Executive level to support
informed decision-making.
· Play an active role in the SLEDG and Audit & Risk Committee (ARC) meetings, providing
expert legal and compliance advice.
· Lead, develop and manage the Legal and Compliance team to ensure optimal
performance and service delivery.
Risk & Compliance Management
· Drive the Scheme's compliance framework, ensuring ongoing adherence to legislative,
regulatory and corporate governance requirements.
· Lead the implementation, monitoring and reporting of Environmental, Social and
Governance (ESG) initiatives and requirements across the Scheme.
· Ensure the effective management of compliance risks through robust controls, monitoring
and reporting mechanisms.


· Provide guidance on emerging regulatory developments and assess the impact on the
organisation.
· Maintain a strong compliance culture and ensure compliance considerations are
embedded in business operations and strategic initiatives.
Stakeholder Management
· Build and maintain effective relationships with regulatory bodies, attorneys, service
providers and key stakeholders.
· Provide clear instructions to external legal counsel and manage ongoing engagements to
ensure efficient resolution of legal matters.
· Represent the Scheme confidently at regulatory, governance and legal forums.
· Engage with Executive Management, Board Committees and other stakeholders to
provide sound legal and compliance advice.

Desired Experience & Qualification

10 -15 years
- 8 -10 Years in Legal Advisory
- 5+ Years Health Care

- Bachelor’s degree in law
- Admitted Attorney – Law Society of South
Africa (LSSA)
- Registered with Compliance Institute of South Africa - CPrac (SA) Compliance Practitioner (SA)
- Masters is Law
