Opportunity Overview

The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to join its team as a Deputy Manager Nursing for Level 1 & 2 Hospitals. This is a crucial management role responsible for overseeing and enhancing nursing services across healthcare facilities in Gauteng.

This position offers a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to lead nursing teams, ensure the provision of quality patient care, and contribute significantly to the health outcomes of communities within the province. The successful candidate will play a vital role in upholding professional nursing standards and implementing key healthcare strategies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Basic R425 qualification (Diploma or Degree in Nursing) allowing registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
  • Minimum of nine (9) years of appropriate/recognized experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC.
  • At least four (4) years of the above experience must be appropriate/recognized at Nursing Management level (Assistant Manager Nursing Level).
  • A Diploma in Nursing Administrative/Management or health care management obtained from a recognized institution will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of legislations and Health related Acts and Ethical Nursing practices.
  • Understanding of the Nursing legislative framework and National Core Standards.
  • Ability to plan, organize, lead, and coordinate nursing services within a hospital setting.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic understanding of human resources, disciplinary procedures, and financial management policies.
  • Computer literacy (Ms Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, and Outlook) and report writing skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct nursing services, ensuring overall control of quality patient care in the Hospital.
  • Provide professional, technical, and management support for quality patient care through managing nursing care programs.
  • Advocate for the promotion of nursing ethos and professionalism.
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of policies, programs, regulations, practices, protocols/procedures, and standards pertaining to nursing care.
  • Establish, maintain, and participate in inter-professional and multi-disciplinary teams for effective and efficient health care.
  • Manage and monitor the utilization of Human Resources and Finances in accordance with relevant directives and prescripts.
  • Participate in Hospital Executive decision-making bodies.
  • Collaborate with other team members in the Hospital to identify actual and potential risks.
  • Support Nursing and Health care research to improve the quality of care.
  • Lead the implementation of the National Core Standards (NCS).
  • Proactively identify continuing professional development (CPD) requirements for nurses and midwives.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of the national strategic plan for nurse education, training, and practice.
