Bookkeeper - 20165

Role: Bookkeeper
Employment Type: Full-time, Independent Contractor
Work Model: Remote (South Africa based)
Work Hours: Full US Eastern Standard Time (EST) Alignment

Role Summary

We are seeking a highly meticulous, process-driven Bookkeeper based in South Africa to take full operational ownership of the day-to-day general ledger maintenance across our multiple US-based entities. This position is built for a senior numbers operator who goes beyond mechanical data entry to actively audit transactions, run complex reconciliations, and drive our month-end close workflows to a clean, on-time completion.

Reporting directly to the Finance Operations Lead, you will bridge day-to-day transactional accounting with financial statement preparation. The ideal candidate is deeply autonomous, possesses a rigorous understanding of US bookkeeping workflows (including accrual accounting adjustments), and maintains flawless communication protocols inside a fast-moving, remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • General Ledger & Chart of Accounts: Maintain clean, audit-ready bookkeeping records across multiple distinct entities inside QuickBooks Online or Xero, ensuring precise transactional categorization.

  • Month-End Close Acceleration: Own core components of the month-end close pipeline—including preparing journal entries, calculating monthly accruals, adjustments, and handling inter-company transactions.

  • Advanced Reconciliations: Perform comprehensive monthly reconciliations across high-volume business bank accounts, corporate credit cards, and complex merchant gateway processors (e.g., Stripe, PayPal).

  • Payroll & Benefits Allocation: Reconcile US payroll runs (including salary, hourly tracking, and commissions) to the general ledger, ensuring proper cross-departmental cost allocations.

  • Liaison & Reporting: Package preliminary balance sheets and P&L statements for management review, ensuring complete data synchronization across auxiliary operations platforms.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: 3 - 5+ years of progressive, full-charge bookkeeping or accounting experience, ideally supporting US or UK-based corporate clients remotely.

  • Educational Foundation: Degree or formal diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Professional registration with a recognized body (SAIPA or equivalent) is highly preferred.

  • Software Mastery: Elite proficiency in QuickBooks Online or Xero, alongside advanced Excel capabilities (pivot tables, complex multi-sheet linking, formulas).

  • US Market Fluency: Solid operational understanding of US corporate workflows, merchant clearing cycles, and accrual vs. cash mechanics.

  • Infrastructure Autonomy: Must have a dedicated, quiet home office setup with a high-speed fiber internet connection and a verified inverter/UPS backup system to ensure continuous connectivity during regional grid outages (loadshedding).
